His most replayed moment came in Barbarians colours against the All Blacks in Cardiff in 1973. After Phil Bennett launched a counter-attack from near his own line and the ball moved through several pairs of hands, Edwards arrived at full pace to dive into the corner for what is still called rugby's greatest try.
A 2003 poll of international players voted Edwards the greatest rugby player of all time. The judgement reflects more than nostalgia: he possessed the core skills of a scrum-half, the physical range of a back-rower and the timing to appear exactly where a great move needed to finish.
