Alan Hansen joined Liverpool from Partick Thistle in 1977 and spent thirteen seasons as perhaps the finest ball-playing centre-back the club has ever produced. Eight First Division titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups — a trophy haul that reflects a player who was central to the most successful era in English club football history. His ability to bring the ball out from defence, his reading of the game and his positional awareness made him the model for the modern centre-back a full decade before such a concept existed.
For Scotland he earned just 26 caps — a criminally low number for a player of his quality, partly explained by the extraordinary competition in Scottish football at the time. He retired in 1991 and became one of television's most authoritative pundits, most famously for his Match of the Day analysis. He passed away in April 2025. A gentleman and a giant of the game.
