His 2012 season transformed him from a promising defender into one of the leading players in the league. Watt recorded 20.5 sacks, narrowly missing the existing single-season record, and established a new level of all-round defensive production.
He accumulated 39 tackles behind the line and 42 quarterback hits while defending 16 passes. Watt could disrupt a running play, pressure the quarterback or leap to knock down a throw on consecutive snaps. Houston won 12 games and claimed another AFC South championship.
Watt was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year, First-Team All-Pro and a Pro Bowl selection. His performances made number 99 one of the most recognisable shirts in Houston sport and established him as the central figure in the Texans defence.
The 2014 season demonstrated an even wider range of abilities. Watt again recorded 20.5 sacks and became the first player to produce two 20-sack campaigns. He also contributed as an occasional tight end near the goal line, catching three touchdown passes.
On defence, Watt returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown and scored following a fumble recovery. His five total touchdowns gave a defensive lineman an attacking contribution normally associated with a specialist receiver or running back.
Watt won his second Defensive Player of the Year award and finished runner-up in NFL MVP voting. His position in that ballot showed how significantly he affected games despite not playing quarterback.
In 2015, Watt led the league with 17.5 sacks while recording 29 tackles for loss and 50 quarterback hits. Houston recovered from a 2–5 start to win the AFC South, and Watt received his third Defensive Player of the Year award in four seasons.
Only a select group of players have won that award three times. Watt achieved the total during his first five seasons, combining it with four consecutive First-Team All-Pro selections and four Pro Bowl appearances.
Injuries caused him to miss much of the 2016 and 2017 campaigns, but Watt’s connection with Houston grew even stronger away from the field. When Hurricane Harvey caused widespread destruction and flooding, he created a fundraising appeal to support residents.
The campaign ultimately raised more than $41 million, far exceeding its original target. The money supported food distribution, healthcare, temporary accommodation and the rebuilding of homes. Watt received the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for his contribution.
He returned in 2018 with 16 sacks, 18 tackles for loss and seven forced fumbles. Watt received a fifth First-Team All-Pro selection and helped the Texans complete an 11–5 season as AFC South champions.
A pectoral injury appeared to end his 2019 season, but Watt completed an accelerated recovery and returned for the playoffs. His sack during the Wild Card game against Buffalo contributed to a comeback victory after Houston had fallen 16 points behind.
Watt recorded his 100th career sack during the 2020 season. He and the Texans then agreed to separate, completing a ten-year relationship in which he had become the franchise leader in almost every major pass-rushing category.
His Houston totals included 101 sacks, 172 tackles for loss, 281 quarterback hits, 25 forced fumbles and 16 recoveries. His sack total stands far ahead of every other player to have represented the Texans.
Watt completed his career with two seasons in Arizona. After an injury-shortened 2021 campaign, he returned to record 12.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss in 2022. He retired with 114.5 sacks, 195 tackles for loss, 27 forced fumbles and 17 fumble recoveries across 151 games.
His career honours include three Defensive Player of the Year awards, five First-Team All-Pro selections, five Pro Bowls, two sack titles and inclusion in the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. The Texans inducted him into their Ring of Honor in 2023, and he was selected for the Houston Sports Hall of Fame class of 2026.
Watt did not compete within a separate senior international tournament structure because his achievements came through American college football and the NFL. Since retiring, his work as a broadcaster and his investment in Burnley Football Club have allowed UK sports fans to see another side of his sporting interests.
