Born in Waukesha and raised in Pewaukee, Wisconsin, Watt played football, basketball, baseball and ice hockey during his youth. He worked delivering pizzas while attending a community college and preparing for another opportunity. Watt then joined the University of Wisconsin as a walk-on, beginning a journey that became central to his reputation for determination and self-belief.
After redshirting in 2008, Watt developed into an important defensive end for the Badgers. His final college season in 2010 produced 62 tackles, 21 tackles behind the line, seven sacks, three forced fumbles, nine defended passes and an interception.
Watt was named Wisconsin’s Most Valuable Player as the team won a share of the Big Ten championship and reached the Rose Bowl. He earned First-Team All-Big Ten and All-American recognition and received the Lott IMPACT Trophy, which rewards defensive excellence alongside character.
Houston selected Watt with the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He started every game as a rookie, recording 5.5 sacks and earning a place on the league’s All-Rookie Team. His most memorable contribution arrived during the first playoff game in Texans history.
Facing Cincinnati, Watt intercepted a pass near the line of scrimmage and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown. The play gave Houston a half-time lead and helped the Texans secure their first postseason victory. It also provided an early example of his ability to influence a game in ways rarely associated with a defensive lineman.
Watt’s second season became one of the greatest defensive campaigns in league history. He recorded 20.5 sacks, 39 tackles for loss, 42 quarterback hits and 16 passes defended. His ability to knock down throws became so recognisable that supporters began referring to the deflections as “swats”.
Houston finished 12–4 and retained the AFC South title, while Watt received his first NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. He also earned First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl recognition, beginning a four-season run in which he established himself as the defining defensive player in the league.
After playing through injuries in 2013, Watt returned with another remarkable campaign in 2014. He recorded 20.5 sacks for the second time and became the first player to produce multiple seasons with at least 20 sacks. He remains the only player to have achieved that feat.
Watt’s 2014 influence extended to scoring touchdowns. He caught three passes as a tight end, with all three resulting in scores. On defence, he returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown and scored again after recovering a fumble. No other player had combined three touchdown receptions, an interception-return score and a fumble-recovery touchdown within one season.
His extraordinary campaign earned a second Defensive Player of the Year award. Watt also finished second in voting for NFL Most Valuable Player, an exceptionally high result for a defensive lineman in an award usually dominated by quarterbacks.
The following season brought another 17.5 sacks, 29 tackles for loss and 50 quarterback hits. Watt led the league in sacks and helped Houston recover from a difficult start to win the AFC South. He collected his third Defensive Player of the Year award in four seasons.
At that point, Watt joined the small group of players to receive the award three times. His first five NFL seasons had produced three of the most dominant defensive campaigns the sport had witnessed, despite opponents building their blocking plans around limiting number 99.
Back and leg injuries restricted Watt during 2016 and 2017, but his importance to Houston extended far beyond the field. After Hurricane Harvey caused devastating flooding throughout the area in 2017, Watt established a fundraising campaign to support those affected.
The initial target was quickly surpassed, and the campaign eventually raised more than $41 million. The funds helped provide food, medical support, temporary housing and rebuilding assistance. Watt received the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for his response and wider community contribution.
He returned to elite form in 2018, recording 16 sacks, 18 tackles for loss and seven forced fumbles. Watt earned his fifth Pro Bowl selection and fifth First-Team All-Pro honour as Houston won another AFC South title.
A torn pectoral muscle appeared likely to end his 2019 season, but Watt returned in time for the playoffs. Houston defeated Buffalo in the Wild Card Round, with Watt recording an important sack as the Texans recovered from a 16-point deficit.
During 2020, Watt recorded his 100th career sack and completed his tenth season in Houston. He left the franchise with team records of 101 sacks, 172 tackles for loss, 281 quarterback hits, 25 forced fumbles and 16 fumble recoveries.
Watt spent his final two seasons with Arizona. Injuries limited him during 2021, but he completed his career with a strong 2022 campaign featuring 12.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss. He announced his retirement after the season.
Across 151 regular-season appearances, Watt recorded 114.5 sacks, 195 tackles for loss, 27 forced fumbles, 17 fumble recoveries and two interceptions. He also scored touchdowns as a receiver, interception returner and fumble returner.
His honours include three NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards, five Pro Bowl selections, five First-Team All-Pro selections and two league sack titles. Watt was also selected for the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.
Houston inducted Watt into the Texans Ring of Honor in 2023, making him one of the first players granted the franchise’s highest recognition. He was also selected for the Houston Sports Hall of Fame class of 2026. His eligibility for the Pro Football Hall of Fame begins in 2028.
Watt’s career did not include a separate senior international tournament record because his achievements came through American college football and the NFL. His work in broadcasting and involvement with Burnley Football Club have nevertheless maintained a connection with sports fans in the UK after retirement.
