Hurts started the contest against Georgia but was replaced by Tua Tagovailoa at half-time, with Alabama eventually winning in overtime. Although the change cost him the starting position, Hurts remained with the programme and continued preparing for another opportunity.
That opportunity arrived in the 2018 SEC Championship Game. With Alabama trailing Georgia and Tagovailoa injured, Hurts entered from the bench. He threw the tying touchdown pass and then ran for the winning score, completing a memorable personal comeback and helping Alabama retain its unbeaten record.
Hurts transferred to Oklahoma for the 2019 season and flourished within a new attacking system. He completed almost 70 per cent of his passes for 3,851 yards and 32 touchdowns while adding 1,298 rushing yards and 20 scores. Oklahoma won the Big 12 championship and reached the College Football Playoff.
His performances earned First-Team All-Big 12 recognition and second place in the Heisman Trophy voting behind Joe Burrow. Across his complete college career, Hurts passed for 9,477 yards and 80 touchdowns while rushing for 3,274 yards and 43 scores. His teams compiled a 38–4 record in games he started.
Philadelphia selected Hurts with the 53rd overall pick in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He initially served behind Carson Wentz before earning his first start late in the season. Hurts became the primary starter in 2021 and guided the Eagles into the playoffs during his first full campaign in charge.
The major breakthrough arrived in 2022. Hurts led Philadelphia to victories in its first eight games and compiled a 14–1 record in his regular-season starts. He passed for 3,701 yards and 22 touchdowns while rushing for 760 yards and 13 more scores.
Hurts’ combination of passing accuracy and rushing strength made the Eagles particularly effective in short-yardage situations. The team developed its powerful quarterback-sneak formation, commonly known as the Brotherly Shove or Tush Push. Behind an outstanding offensive line, Hurts became exceptionally difficult to stop when Philadelphia needed a single yard or a goal-line touchdown.
The Eagles defeated the New York Giants 38–7 in the Divisional Round and San Francisco 31–7 in the NFC Championship Game. Hurts became the first Philadelphia quarterback to lead the franchise to a Super Bowl within his first full two seasons as the regular starter.
His performance in Super Bowl LVII against Kansas City was one of the finest by a quarterback in a championship defeat. Hurts completed 27 passes for 304 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 70 yards and three scores. He also ran in a two-point conversion, accounting for 20 points himself.
Hurts established Super Bowl quarterback records for rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, but Kansas City won 38–35 with a late field goal. A second-quarter fumble returned for a touchdown became a difficult moment, yet Hurts responded during the game and used the defeat as motivation for what followed.
He finished second in voting for NFL Most Valuable Player and received Second-Team All-Pro recognition for the 2022 season. Philadelphia rewarded his development with a long-term contract, confirming his status as the quarterback around whom the team intended to build.
Hurts scored 15 rushing touchdowns in 2023, setting a new single-season mark for an NFL quarterback at the time. The Eagles returned to the playoffs, although their campaign ended against Tampa Bay in the Wild Card Round.
Philadelphia responded by adding running back Saquon Barkley and developing a more balanced offence in 2024. After beginning the season 2–2, the Eagles won 12 of their final 13 regular-season games. Hurts passed for 18 touchdowns, rushed for 14 and helped Philadelphia reclaim the NFC East.
The Eagles defeated Green Bay, the Los Angeles Rams and Washington in the playoffs to return to the Super Bowl. Hurts accounted for five passing touchdowns and five rushing scores across the postseason, repeatedly delivering in decisive moments.
Super Bowl LIX provided a rematch with Kansas City. Hurts completed 17 of 22 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 72 yards and another score. His touchdown passes to A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith helped Philadelphia establish a commanding lead.
The Eagles won 40–22, securing the second Super Bowl championship in franchise history. Hurts was named Super Bowl Most Valuable Player after producing 293 total yards, three touchdowns and a passer rating of 119.7. He had converted the disappointment of his first championship appearance into the defining victory of his career.
During the 2025 season, Hurts started 16 games and led Philadelphia to an 11–5 record in those appearances. He passed for 3,224 yards and 25 touchdowns against only six interceptions, adding 421 rushing yards and eight scores. The Eagles returned to the playoffs but were defeated by San Francisco in the Wild Card Round.
Through that season, Hurts had accumulated 17,891 passing yards, 110 touchdown passes, 3,554 rushing yards and 63 rushing touchdowns. He had earned three Pro Bowl selections, a Second-Team All-Pro honour and the Super Bowl MVP award while establishing himself as one of the defining dual-threat quarterbacks of his generation.
Hurts’ career has developed through American college football and the NFL rather than a separate senior international tournament structure. There is therefore no national-team competition record associated with him, with his greatest honours coming through Alabama, Oklahoma and Philadelphia.
