Jimmy Greaves scored 220 goals for Tottenham Hotspur — the club’s all-time leading scorer — and 266 goals across his entire career, a record that stood until Alan Shearer surpassed it. His goalscoring instinct was so natural and so consistent that many who watched him consider him the finest natural finisher English football has ever produced.

Greaves’s Spurs years coincided with the double-winning and Cup Winners’ Cup-winning side of the early 1960s, and his partnership with Bobby Smith gave White Hart Lane a centre-forward combination of extraordinary quality. His omission from England’s 1966 World Cup final team when fit again after injury remains the most debated selection decision in English football history.
