Campos was born in Acapulco, Mexico, in 1966 and came through the youth system in his home country, making his professional debut as a teenager. What made him unusual from the start was his size — at just 5 feet 7 inches, he was extraordinarily small for a goalkeeper by any standard, but he compensated for his lack of height with phenomenal athleticism, extraordinary reflexes and a positional intelligence that made him difficult to beat despite being smaller than virtually every striker he faced. He won the Mexican Primera División multiple times and became the most celebrated goalkeeper in the history of Mexican football.
His kits became as famous as his performances. Campos designed his own goalkeeping strips in vivid, clashing fluorescent colours and patterns that were unlike anything anyone had seen in professional football. They became synonymous with his identity and with Mexican football's personality in the 1990s, adding an element of spectacle to his performances that matched the flamboyance of his shot-stopping and his willingness to sweep outside his area and play like an additional outfield player.
At the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, he was one of Mexico's most important players, making saves that kept his country in matches and delivering performances that earned him recognition as one of the best goalkeepers in international football. He was also capable of playing as a striker in certain matches, demonstrating an all-round footballing ability that was entirely unique for his position.
