From Firebaugh to the Professional Game
Josh Allen’s career is an example of persistence, development and belief. Born in Firebaugh, California, in 1996, he grew up working on his family’s farm and playing several sports. Despite his size and athleticism, he received little interest from major college football programmes when leaving high school.
Allen started at Reedley College, competing at junior-college level while continuing to pursue an opportunity elsewhere. Wyoming eventually offered him a place, giving him the platform to demonstrate his arm strength, mobility and potential against leading college competition.
During the 2016 season, Allen guided Wyoming to the Mountain West Championship Game. He became known for creating spectacular plays outside the normal structure of the offence, combining long throws with the ability to escape defenders. In his final college appearance, he helped defeat Central Michigan in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl after throwing three touchdowns during the first half.
Buffalo selected Allen with the seventh overall pick in 2018. The decision involved considerable projection. His physical qualities were undeniable, but he needed to improve his accuracy, decision-making and consistency. Allen embraced that challenge and developed dramatically during his first three seasons.
Transforming the Buffalo Bills
Allen’s rookie campaign immediately demonstrated his unusual combination of size and speed. He could throw beyond the deepest coverage, escape pressure and lower his shoulder against defenders when running for a first down. As his passing became more controlled, he developed into a quarterback with almost no physical limitation.
His transformation reached another level in 2020. Allen completed 69.2 per cent of his passes for 4,544 yards and 37 touchdowns. He added eight rushing scores and led Buffalo to a 13–3 record. The Bills won the AFC East for the first time in 25 years and advanced to the AFC Championship Game.
Buffalo subsequently won five consecutive divisional titles from 2020 to 2024. Allen became the centre of an offence capable of scoring from anywhere on the field, while his emotional commitment to the city helped create a deep connection with Bills Mafia.
His playing style is difficult to categorise. Allen has the arm strength of a traditional downfield passer, the speed to escape around the edge and the power to run through contact near the goal line. He can deliver a precise throw from the pocket or improvise while moving in either direction.
Memorable Games and Playoff Performances
Allen helped Buffalo defeat Indianapolis in January 2021, securing the franchise’s first postseason victory in 25 years. After another win against Baltimore, the Bills reached their first AFC Championship Game since the 1993 season.
His performance against New England in the following season’s Wild Card round was one of the most efficient postseason displays ever produced by an offence. Buffalo scored touchdowns on all seven meaningful possessions. The Bills did not punt, attempt a field goal or turn the ball over, while Allen completed 21 of 25 passes for 308 yards and five touchdowns.
That victory led to the famous Divisional Round contest against Kansas City. Allen threw for 329 yards and four touchdowns, all caught by Gabriel Davis. Buffalo took the lead with only 13 seconds remaining, but Kansas City forced overtime before securing a 42–36 win. Allen had matched an established championship quarterback throughout an unforgettable game.
Following the 2024 regular season, Buffalo defeated Denver and Baltimore to reach another AFC Championship Game. Allen scored two rushing touchdowns during the 27–25 win over the Ravens, helping the Bills survive a tense finish and progress past another leading quarterback in Lamar Jackson.
In the Wild Card round following the 2025 season, Allen played through several physical knocks to lead a dramatic 27–24 comeback victory in Jacksonville. He completed 28 of 35 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown, added two rushing scores and finished the decisive late drive with a one-yard run. It was Buffalo’s first road playoff victory in 33 years.
The Bills were eventually defeated 33–30 in overtime by Denver during the Divisional Round. Allen recorded 283 passing yards and three touchdowns in another close postseason game, taking Buffalo’s campaign to the final moments despite a difficult night.
An MVP and Record-Breaking Dual-Threat Quarterback
Allen received the league’s Most Valuable Player award for his 2024 regular season. He generated 4,269 total yards and 41 touchdowns while committing only eight turnovers. Buffalo finished 13–4 and claimed a fifth consecutive AFC East title despite significant changes to its receiving group.
The campaign made Allen the first player in league history to produce at least 40 total touchdowns in five consecutive seasons. He also surpassed Jim Kelly for the most total touchdowns in Bills history, reaching a franchise record previously held by one of Buffalo’s most admired players.
Allen followed that achievement by completing 69.4 per cent of his passes during the 2025 regular season. He threw for 3,668 yards and 25 touchdowns while running for 579 yards and 14 scores. During the campaign, he became the career leader for regular-season rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.
By the end of the 2025 season, Allen had accumulated 30,102 regular-season passing yards and 220 touchdown passes. He had also rushed for 4,721 yards and 79 touchdowns, with an additional receiving score taking him to 300 total regular-season touchdowns.
He became the fastest player in history to reach that total and established a record for games featuring both a passing and rushing touchdown. These achievements demonstrate how completely Allen can influence an offence. He is not simply a quarterback who occasionally scrambles; he is a genuine passing and rushing threat on every part of the field.
Alongside his MVP award, Allen has earned multiple Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections. Still active and contracted to remain in Buffalo through 2030, his career story continues to develop as he pursues the championship that Bills supporters have been waiting to celebrate.
American football does not have a regular senior international tournament system comparable with sports based around national teams. Allen therefore has no separate international competition record. His performances have nevertheless created a worldwide following, including a growing community of Buffalo fans and number 17 fanatics in the UK.
