The Journey from Louisiana to LSU
Justin Jefferson was born in Louisiana in 1999 and followed his older brothers Jordan and Rickey into football. Despite his natural ability, Jefferson was not initially regarded as one of the country’s leading college prospects. He arrived at Louisiana State University with relatively little national attention and had to earn his place within the programme.
After developing during his early time at LSU, Jefferson led the team in receiving during the 2018 season. That progress prepared him for a historic 2019 campaign alongside quarterback Joe Burrow, receiver Ja’Marr Chase and a collection of players who would eventually reach the professional game.
Jefferson caught 111 passes for 1,540 yards and 18 touchdowns as LSU completed an unbeaten season. His finest statistical performance came in the Peach Bowl semi-final against Oklahoma, where he recorded 14 receptions, 227 yards and four first-half touchdowns. LSU won 63–28 and advanced to face Clemson in the national championship game.
Jefferson contributed nine catches for 106 yards in the final as LSU won 42–25 and completed a perfect 15–0 season. The championship established him as a leading professional prospect and concluded one of the most productive receiving campaigns in college football history.
A Record-Breaking Rookie Season
Minnesota selected Jefferson with the 22nd overall pick in the 2020 draft. He did not immediately begin the season as a full-time starter, but his performances soon made his talent impossible to overlook. In his third professional game, he produced 175 receiving yards and a touchdown against Tennessee.
Jefferson completed his rookie season with 88 receptions for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns. His yardage established a new Super Bowl-era rookie record at the time and earned him Second-Team All-Pro recognition. He also received the first Pro Bowl selection of his career.
His immediate success came from more than speed. Jefferson demonstrated advanced route running, exceptional body control and an ability to understand defensive positioning. He could create separation from outside or in the slot, adjust to inaccurate passes and continue gaining yards after the catch.
The touchdown celebration known as the “Griddy” also became closely associated with Jefferson. Originating from Louisiana dance culture, the celebration travelled to a worldwide audience as he continued finding the end zone. It added another recognisable element to a player already developing into one of Minnesota’s biggest sporting personalities.
Jefferson followed his debut with 108 receptions for 1,616 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2021. His first two seasons produced more than 3,000 receiving yards, placing him on an early career trajectory matched by very few players.
An Unforgettable 2022 Campaign
The 2022 season established Jefferson at the top of his position. He led the league in both receptions and receiving yards, finishing with 128 catches for 1,809 yards and eight touchdowns. Minnesota won 13 games, secured the NFC North title and repeatedly relied on Jefferson during decisive moments.
His most famous catch came against Buffalo. With Minnesota facing fourth-and-18 late in the game, Jefferson extended one hand backwards while a defender contested the ball. He controlled the pass against his opponent’s helmet and maintained possession as he fell to the ground.
The catch kept Minnesota alive in a match it eventually won 33–30 in overtime. Jefferson accumulated 193 receiving yards during the game, producing a performance that immediately became part of Vikings history.
At the conclusion of the season, Jefferson was named Offensive Player of the Year and selected as a First-Team All-Pro. He also finished fifth in voting for the league’s Most Valuable Player award, an unusual level of recognition for a wide receiver.
Consistency, Records and Career Milestones
A hamstring injury restricted Jefferson to 10 games in 2023, but he still passed 1,000 receiving yards. He caught 68 passes for 1,074 yards and five touchdowns, preserving his record of reaching four figures in every professional season.
Jefferson returned to full health in 2024 and recorded 103 receptions, 1,533 yards and 10 touchdowns. His performances contributed to Minnesota’s 14–3 regular-season record and earned him another Pro Bowl selection. He was also unanimously selected as a First-Team All-Pro.
During the 2025 campaign, Jefferson worked with further changes at quarterback but still produced 84 catches for 1,048 yards. That gave him six consecutive 1,000-yard seasons from the beginning of his career.
Jefferson also became the youngest receiver in league history to reach 8,000 career yards, passing the age record previously held by former Minnesota star Randy Moss. He became only the third player to surpass 8,000 receiving yards within his first six seasons.
Through 94 regular-season games, Jefferson recorded 579 receptions, 8,480 receiving yards and 42 touchdowns. He also moved into third place on Minnesota’s career receiving yardage list, behind only Hall of Fame receivers Cris Carter and Randy Moss.
His career honours include multiple Pro Bowl appearances, two First-Team All-Pro selections, two Second-Team All-Pro selections and the 2022 Offensive Player of the Year award. As an active player entering the next stage of his career, Jefferson has the opportunity to add significantly to those totals.
Representing Minnesota on an International Stage
American football is not structured around a regular senior international tournament system, so Jefferson does not have a separate national-team record. He has nevertheless represented Minnesota during regular-season games played outside the United States.
In 2022, Jefferson played in Minnesota’s victory over New Orleans at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. He caught 10 passes for 147 yards and scored a rushing touchdown as the Vikings won 28–25. The performance gave British supporters an opportunity to watch his talent at close range.
Jefferson returned to Europe in 2025 when Minnesota faced Pittsburgh at Croke Park in Dublin. During the first regular-season league game held in Ireland, he passed Anthony Carter for third place on the Vikings’ career receiving yardage list. These appearances have strengthened his connection with American football fans across the UK and Ireland.
