Piggott’s career contained controversy and a startling comeback. After retirement and imprisonment for tax offences, he returned to riding and, aged 54, won the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Mile on Royal Academy for Vincent O’Brien. “The Long Fellow” remained a reference point for generations of riders because his numbers and competitive intelligence were equally formidable.
