Malik Turner was born in Springfield, Illinois, in 1996 and attended Sacred Heart-Griffin High School before continuing his football career with the University of Illinois. Rather than entering college as one of the country’s most heavily promoted recruits, Turner built his reputation through consistent development and dependable performances.
He appeared in 46 games for Illinois and started 35 of them, finishing his college career with 143 receptions for 1,804 yards and 10 touchdowns. At the time he completed his university career, Turner ranked ninth in Illinois history for both receiving yards and catches.
One of his finest individual college performances came against Northwestern in 2016. Turner caught 11 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns, establishing career highs in receiving yardage and matching his best total for receptions and scores in a single game.
His contribution extended beyond the field. Turner earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition, was selected for the National Football Foundation’s Hampshire Honor Society and became a Campbell Trophy semi-finalist. Earning a Professional Opportunity
Turner was not selected in the 2018 draft, meaning there was no guaranteed roster position waiting for him. Seattle signed him as an undrafted free agent, giving him an opportunity to compete for a place within a professional receiving group.
He spent time on the practice squad before earning promotion to the active roster during his rookie season. Turner appeared in six games in 2018 and recorded his first two professional receptions. His progress demonstrated the value of remaining prepared even when immediate playing opportunities were limited.
Turner became more involved in the Seattle offence during 2019. He appeared in 15 games, made three starts and caught 15 passes for 245 yards. His average of more than 16 yards per reception illustrated his ability to contribute to downfield passing plays.
The first touchdown of his professional career arrived during a road victory over Philadelphia. Seattle used a carefully designed flea-flicker, with Russell Wilson receiving the ball back before throwing deep towards Turner. Productive Moments in Dallas
Turner joined Dallas in 2020 and initially contributed primarily through special teams. That role required discipline, physical commitment and an understanding that not every valuable contribution appears within receiving statistics.
His opportunities expanded during the 2021 season. Turner appeared in 14 games and caught 12 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns. He made the most of limited targets, with eight of his 12 receptions producing first downs.
One of his finest Dallas performances came during a dominant victory over Washington in December 2021. Turner caught a short pass from Cooper Rush and accelerated through the defence, avoiding several attempted tackles during a 61-yard catch-and-run.
On the following play, Rush returned to Turner for a touchdown. The sequence demonstrated his ability to create after the catch and provided a memorable contribution to a 56–14 Dallas victory.
Turner also scored twice against Denver earlier in the season, producing two of the positive moments from a difficult game for Dallas. He finished the campaign with three receiving touchdowns, the highest single-season total of his professional career.
Joining the San Francisco 49ers
Turner signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 2022 and appeared in three regular-season games. His work was focused primarily on special teams, an area in which reserve receivers can provide important value through coverage, blocking and return units.
That San Francisco team won the NFC West and progressed to the NFC Championship Game. Turner’s part of the campaign was limited, but earning appearances within a deep and highly competitive roster represented another stage in his professional journey.
He subsequently spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders and Houston Texans practice squads before joining Indianapolis for its 2023 training camp. In 2024, Turner returned to San Francisco during the summer and later joined the practice squad.
A Standout Season with the Michigan Panthers
Turner signed with the Michigan Panthers ahead of the 2025 United Football League season. The opportunity allowed him to play a much larger role within an offence and demonstrate that he could still produce as a receiver.
Across 10 regular-season games, Turner recorded 40 receptions for 365 yards and four touchdowns. He then elevated his performances during the postseason, catching 16 passes for 267 yards and four more scores across two games.
His eight combined touchdowns and outstanding playoff production attracted attention from San Francisco. The 49ers brought Turner back in August 2025, beginning another chapter with a team and offensive system he already understood.
Turner appeared in three games for San Francisco during the 2025 regular season and contributed three special-teams tackles. Through the end of that campaign, he had appeared in 47 professional regular-season games, making three starts and recording 29 receptions for 414 yards and four touchdowns.
His career is a story of persistence rather than an uninterrupted route to stardom. Turner has experienced active rosters, practice squads, training camps and a successful spell in spring football. Each stage required him to remain physically prepared and ready for the next opportunity.
