Diego Maradona came from the villas miseria of Buenos Aires to become the most famous footballer who ever lived — first at Argentinos Juniors and Argentina youth teams, then Barcelona, then Napoli, where he achieved the seemingly impossible: winning the Serie A title for the southern club in a league dominated by the northern giants. He won it twice — 1987 and 1990 — and in doing so became a god to the people of Naples in a way that has never been replicated.
The 1986 World Cup in Mexico was Maradona's greatest performance — six goals and five assists across seven games, culminating in a final against West Germany that Argentina won 3-2. The quarter-final against England produced both infamous goals within four minutes: the punch that he later attributed to the Hand of God, and then the run from his own half in which he beat five English players before scoring. For pure football genius concentrated into a single career, there has never been anyone like him.
