Marshawn Lynch was born in Oakland in 1986 and developed a distinctive running style built around balance, strength and determination. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he became one of the most productive running backs in the programme’s history.
During the 2005 season, Lynch rushed for 1,246 yards and starred in the Las Vegas Bowl. He gained 194 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns, setting California bowl records and earning a share of the game’s Most Valuable Player award.
Lynch improved again in 2006, leading the Pac-10 with 1,356 rushing yards. He helped California earn a share of the conference title and was named Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year and a First-Team All-American.
He completed three college seasons with 3,230 rushing yards, 29 rushing touchdowns and 4,574 all-purpose yards. His 17 games with at least 100 rushing yards remain a California record, and he was inducted into the university’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021.

His finest statistical campaign came in 2012, when he gained 1,590 rushing yards and scored 11 touchdowns. He was selected as a First-Team All-Pro and helped Seattle develop into a serious championship contender.

Lynch scored the first rushing touchdown in Seattle’s Super Bowl history. The victory secured the franchise’s first championship and confirmed the Seahawks as the leading team of the season.
Consecutive Super Bowl Appearances
Seattle returned to the championship game following the 2014 campaign. Lynch had led the league with 13 rushing touchdowns during the regular season and contributed 157 rushing yards in the dramatic NFC Championship victory over Green Bay.
In Super Bowl XLIX, he gained 102 rushing yards and scored a touchdown against New England. Seattle moved to the opponent’s one-yard line during the final minute but chose a passing play rather than another Lynch carry. The pass was intercepted, giving New England a 28–24 victory.
The decision remains one of the most discussed calls in the history of the sport. It also reflects the confidence supporters had in Lynch, with many believing Beast Mode was the player most likely to carry the ball across the final yard.
Earlier in the season, Lynch had produced a second run worthy of the Beast Quake name. Against Arizona, he escaped multiple defenders and completed a career-long 79-yard touchdown, providing another enduring highlight of his Seattle career.

Lynch initially retired after an injury-affected 2015 season. He returned in 2017 to play for his hometown Oakland Raiders and remained with the team for two campaigns.
In December 2019, injuries left Seattle needing experienced support at running back. Lynch returned for the final regular-season game and the playoffs. He scored a touchdown in the season finale before adding three more rushing scores across two postseason appearances.
Lynch ended his professional career with 10,413 rushing yards and 85 rushing touchdowns. He added more than 2,000 receiving yards and nine scores through the air, demonstrating that his contribution was not limited to carries from the backfield.
His Seattle record includes 6,381 regular-season rushing yards and 58 touchdowns, ranking second in franchise history in both categories. Lynch also accumulated 970 postseason rushing yards and a team-record 12 playoff touchdowns across 13 appearances for the Seahawks.
He earned five Pro Bowl selections, received First-Team All-Pro recognition in 2012 and Second-Team honours in 2014. His dominance throughout the decade brought selection for the 2010s All-Decade Team.

American football does not provide a regular senior international tournament structure comparable with sports centred on national teams.
