A Celebrated Boston College Quarterback
Matt Ryan was born in Pennsylvania in 1985 and attended Boston College, where he developed into one of the finest quarterbacks in the university’s history. After beginning his college career as a reserve, Ryan became the regular starter and led the Eagles through two of their most successful modern seasons.
Boston College finished 10–3 in 2006, its first 10-win campaign since Doug Flutie’s 1984 team. Ryan concluded the season by helping the Eagles defeat Navy in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
The following year brought a memorable 8–0 start and a rise to number two in the national rankings. During a Thursday night game at Virginia Tech, Ryan led two touchdown drives in the final four minutes as Boston College recovered from a 10–0 deficit to win 14–10.
The Eagles secured the ACC Atlantic Division title and appeared in the conference championship game for the first time. Ryan ended his senior campaign with 4,507 passing yards and 31 touchdowns, both school records at the time, before throwing three scores in a bowl victory over Michigan State.
Ryan was named ACC Player of the Year and received the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, Manning Award and All-American recognition. He finished his college career with 9,313 passing yards and 56 touchdowns, and Boston College later retired his number 12 jersey.
An Immediate Leader in Atlanta
The Falcons selected Ryan with the third overall pick in the 2008 draft. Atlanta needed a new direction, and the young quarterback made an immediate contribution. His first professional pass became a 62-yard touchdown, beginning a rookie season that exceeded expectations.
Ryan passed for 3,440 yards and helped the Falcons finish 11–5, reaching the playoffs after winning only four games during the previous campaign. His leadership and production earned him the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
He started every game during his first season and would miss only three starts across 14 years in Atlanta. That durability allowed Ryan to provide stability through different coaches, coordinators, offensive systems and supporting players.
The nickname Matty Ice became associated with his ability to remain calm during close finishes. Ryan read defensive coverage intelligently, delivered accurate passes under pressure and repeatedly placed Atlanta in position for late winning scores.
Building a Regular Contender
Atlanta finished 13–3 in 2010, winning the NFC South and securing the conference’s leading playoff position. Ryan passed for 3,705 yards and 28 touchdowns while throwing only nine interceptions.
The Falcons again recorded a 13–3 campaign in 2012. Ryan produced 4,719 passing yards and 32 touchdowns, helping Atlanta earn another division title and the NFC’s leading seed.
In the divisional playoff against Seattle, the Falcons surrendered a late advantage and trailed by one point with only seconds remaining. Ryan completed two rapid passes to move Atlanta downfield, setting up the field goal that secured a 30–28 victory.
The win was the first postseason success of Ryan’s professional career and took Atlanta into the NFC Championship Game. He passed for 396 yards and three touchdowns against San Francisco, but the Falcons were narrowly defeated 28–24.
The 2016 MVP and Offensive Player of the Year
Ryan’s defining professional season arrived in 2016. He completed almost 70 per cent of his passes for 4,944 yards and 38 touchdowns while throwing only seven interceptions. His league-leading passer rating reached 117.1.
Atlanta scored 540 points during the regular season and finished with an 11–5 record. Ryan distributed touchdown passes across the offence, making the Falcons difficult to defend because opponents could not focus solely on one receiver.
In the divisional playoff, he threw for 338 yards and three scores as Atlanta defeated Seattle 36–20. The Falcons then hosted Green Bay in the final game played at the Georgia Dome.
Ryan completed 27 passes for 392 yards and four touchdowns, adding a rushing score as Atlanta won the NFC Championship Game 44–21. The victory sent the Falcons to Super Bowl LI and represented one of the greatest quarterback performances in franchise history.
Against New England, Ryan completed 17 of 23 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns. Atlanta built a 28–3 lead, but New England recovered during the second half and secured a 34–28 overtime victory.
The defeat remains one of the most painful moments in Atlanta sporting history, but it does not erase the quality of Ryan’s season. He became the first Falcons player to receive the league’s MVP award and was also named Offensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-Pro.
The Falcons’ Career Passing Leader
Ryan returned to the playoffs in 2017 and helped Atlanta defeat the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card round. The Falcons came close to reaching another NFC Championship Game before losing a tight divisional contest against Philadelphia.
He produced another excellent individual season in 2018, passing for 4,924 yards and 35 touchdowns with only seven interceptions. Ryan continued to surpass 4,000 passing yards regularly, eventually recording 10 consecutive seasons above that mark.
Ryan completed his Atlanta career with franchise records of 59,735 passing yards, 5,242 completions and 367 touchdown passes. He also leads the Falcons in attempts, completion percentage, passer rating and 300-yard games.
Following 14 seasons in Atlanta, Ryan played his final campaign with Indianapolis in 2022. His complete professional record includes 62,792 passing yards, 5,551 completions and 381 touchdowns across 234 starts.
Ryan earned four Pro Bowl selections and retired among the leading passers in the history of the sport. In 2024, he signed a one-day agreement with Atlanta so he could conclude his playing career as a Falcon.
After working as a television analyst, Ryan returned to Atlanta in 2026 as President of Football. The position placed one of the franchise’s greatest players at the centre of its future sporting direction.
Matt Ryan in London
American football is not structured around regular senior national-team tournaments, so Ryan has no separate international championship career. He did, however, represent the Falcons in two regular-season games played in London.
Ryan appeared at Wembley Stadium against Detroit in 2014. He returned to the capital in 2021 when Atlanta faced the New York Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Ryan passed for 342 yards and two touchdowns during a 27–20 Falcons victory.
That performance gave British fans the opportunity to watch Atlanta’s record-breaking quarterback in person and added an international chapter to his long career with the franchise.
