From Boston College to a Top Draft Selection
Matt Ryan was born in Exton, Pennsylvania, in 1985 and developed into one of the leading quarterbacks in Boston College history. After serving as a reserve during the early stages of his college career, he became the permanent starter and guided the Eagles to consecutive seasons with at least 10 victories.
Ryan helped Boston College finish 10–3 in 2006 and secure a victory over Navy in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. His senior campaign in 2007 took the programme to an even higher level. The Eagles began the season with eight consecutive victories and climbed to number two in the national rankings.
One of Ryan’s defining college performances came away to Virginia Tech. Boston College trailed 10–0 with little more than four minutes remaining, but Ryan directed two late touchdown drives. His final scoring pass arrived with only 11 seconds left, completing a remarkable 14–10 comeback.
Ryan led Boston College to the ACC Atlantic Division title and its first appearance in the ACC Championship Game. He completed the season with a school-record 4,507 passing yards and 31 touchdowns before guiding the Eagles to a 24–21 bowl victory over Michigan State.
His senior-year honours included ACC Player of the Year, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Manning Award and All-American recognition. Ryan finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting, and Boston College later retired his number 12 jersey.
Changing the Direction of the Falcons
Atlanta selected Ryan with the third overall pick in the 2008 draft. The Falcons were entering a period of significant change, but their new quarterback made an immediate impact. His first professional pass became a 62-yard touchdown, providing an early indication of the confidence and accuracy he would bring to the position.
Ryan passed for 3,440 yards and 16 touchdowns during his rookie season. More importantly, he helped Atlanta improve to an 11–5 record and reach the playoffs. He was named Offensive Rookie of the Year after beginning a new and more successful era for the franchise.
The nickname “Matty Ice” reflected Ryan’s calm approach during important moments. He became known for remaining composed in the pocket, recognising defensive coverage and directing late scoring drives without allowing pressure to change his decision-making.
Ryan helped Atlanta finish 13–3 in 2010, win the NFC South and secure the leading playoff seed in the conference. He continued developing productive partnerships with receivers including Roddy White, Julio Jones and tight end Tony Gonzalez.
The 2012 NFC Championship Run
The Falcons recorded another 13–3 season in 2012. Ryan passed for 4,719 yards and 32 touchdowns while completing more than 68 per cent of his attempts. Atlanta entered the playoffs as the NFC’s leading seed but still needed to secure the first postseason victory of Ryan’s career.
That breakthrough came against Seattle. Atlanta surrendered a late lead and fell behind 28–27 with only seconds remaining. Ryan responded by completing two rapid passes to move the Falcons into field-goal range, allowing Matt Bryant to secure a dramatic 30–28 victory.
Atlanta then hosted San Francisco in the NFC Championship Game. Ryan passed for 396 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Falcons establish an early advantage. San Francisco recovered to win 28–24, but the campaign demonstrated that Ryan could take Atlanta deep into the postseason.
The Historic 2016 MVP Season
Ryan produced the finest season of his career in 2016. Operating within one of the most productive offences in football history, he completed 69.9 per cent of his passes for 4,944 yards, 38 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.
His passer rating of 117.1 led the league, while Atlanta scored 540 regular-season points. Ryan threw touchdown passes to a wide range of teammates, demonstrating his ability to read each defence and distribute the ball throughout the offence.
The Falcons finished 11–5 and won the NFC South. In the divisional round, Ryan passed for 338 yards and three touchdowns as Atlanta defeated Seattle 36–20. The final game at the Georgia Dome followed against Green Bay in the NFC Championship Game.
Ryan delivered another outstanding performance, completing 27 of 38 passes for 392 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a score as Atlanta won 44–21 and secured the second conference championship in franchise history.
The victory sent the Falcons to Super Bowl LI against New England. Ryan completed 17 of 23 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception. Atlanta established a 28–3 lead, but New England produced a historic comeback and won 34–28 in overtime.
Although the ending remained deeply painful for Falcons fans, the wider campaign was extraordinary. Ryan became the first player in franchise history to win the league’s MVP award and was also named Offensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-Pro.
Atlanta’s Record-Breaking Quarterback
Ryan continued to produce at a high level after the Super Bowl run. Atlanta returned to the playoffs in 2017, defeating the Los Angeles Rams before narrowly losing to eventual champion Philadelphia. In 2018, Ryan passed for 4,924 yards, 35 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.
He remained Atlanta’s starting quarterback through the 2021 season, completing 14 campaigns with the franchise. Ryan missed only three starts during that period, demonstrating exceptional durability at one of the most physically demanding positions in sport.
His Falcons records include 59,735 passing yards, 5,242 completions and 367 touchdown passes. He also established team records for attempts, completion percentage, passer rating and games with at least 300 passing yards.
Ryan played his final professional season with Indianapolis in 2022. He completed his 15-year career with 62,792 passing yards, 5,551 completions and 381 touchdown passes. At the time of his retirement, he ranked among the top 10 in the major career passing categories.
His individual achievements include four Pro Bowl selections, the 2008 Offensive Rookie of the Year award, the 2016 MVP and Offensive Player of the Year awards, and First-Team All-Pro recognition.
Ryan signed a one-day contract with Atlanta in 2024, allowing him to retire as a Falcon. After working in broadcasting, he returned to the franchise in 2026 as President of Football, beginning a new chapter with the team whose offence he led for 14 seasons.
Playing in Front of UK Fans
American football does not provide a regular senior international tournament system comparable with sports organised around national teams, so Ryan has no separate World Cup-style career record. He did, however, represent Atlanta in regular-season games played in London.
Ryan played against Detroit at Wembley Stadium in 2014 and later faced the New York Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2021. In the latter contest, he passed for 342 yards and two touchdowns as Atlanta earned a 27–20 victory, giving UK fans an opportunity to watch Matty Ice at close range.
