Paolo Rossi remains one of Italy’s most legendary strikers. After early years with Juventus and a loan spell at Como, he made his name at Vicenza, where his goals helped the club win promotion from Serie B before he became Serie A top scorer. He later played for Perugia, returned to Juventus, then had spells with AC Milan and Hellas Verona. With Juventus, Rossi won major honours including Serie A titles, the Coppa Italia, the European Cup Winners’ Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the European Cup.

His international career is the stuff of football history. Rossi scored 20 goals in 48 appearances for Italy and became the defining figure of the 1982 World Cup. After a quiet start to the tournament, he exploded into life with a famous hat-trick against Brazil, scored twice against Poland in the semi-final, and netted in the final against West Germany as Italy lifted the trophy. He finished the tournament as top scorer, won the Golden Boot, was named best player of the tournament, and later won the Ballon d’Or.
