Red Rum horse racing T-shirt
Red Rum is part of racing’s shared language. Mention the name to an informed supporter and the conversation quickly turns to Aintree’s unique three-time Grand National winner, the performances that defined a generation and the precise memories attached to them. This T-shirt turns that recognition into a colourful, understated piece of horse-racing clothing made for people who know why the story matters.
This design is for the supporter who can picture the stride, the colours and the defining finish before the race name has even been completed. It celebrates a horse as racing fans remember one: not as a list of statistics, but through the performances, rivals and moments that gave those statistics meaning.
The races that made the legend
Red Rum and the Grand National became inseparable. Bred for speed, dead-heating in a five-furlong race as a two-year-old, he later developed into the greatest specialist Aintree has known under trainer Ginger McCain. McCain prepared him on Southport beach and in seawater, methods used to manage troublesome feet. Owned by Noel le Mare and ridden most famously by Brian Fletcher and Tommy Stack, “Rummy” understood the long run, repeated jumping rhythm and exhausting finish.
His 1973 victory remains one of the National’s great chases: Crisp carried top weight, established a huge lead and still appeared clear at the last, only for Red Rum to erode the margin and pass him near the line in record time. He won again in 1974, finished second in 1975 and 1976, then returned aged 12 to win a third National in 1977. No other horse has matched three victories plus two seconds.
Red Rum never fell in 100 races and became a national celebrity, opening the Grand National parade and appearing at public events long after retirement. He was buried beside Aintree’s winning post when he died in 1995. His story combines improbable durability with exact mastery of one race—a horse whose return each April felt like a familiar champion coming home.
Why Red Rum still matters to racing supporters
Aintree asked the same immense question five years running and Red Rum supplied finishes of remarkable consistency: three wins and two seconds. The Crisp chase introduced him through one of racing’s greatest pursuits, but the 1977 victory turned excellence into folklore. By then the 12-year-old was not merely contesting the National; he represented it.

A subtle icon-frame design for racing supporters
The artwork uses our recognisable icon-frame format: a vivid portrait-style racing image contained within a clean rectangular frame and positioned on the left chest. At approximately 10cm tall, it has enough colour and detail to reward a closer look without becoming an oversized front print. That balance is deliberate. It allows the subject to remain unmistakable to another racing fan while the overall garment stays versatile, wearable and easy to combine with the rest of a wardrobe.
The composition focuses on the visual identity associated with Red Rum rather than trying to crowd an entire career onto the garment. Racing silks, posture, movement and colour do the immediate work; the record and memories supply the depth. It is a conversation starter for people who followed the career first-hand, discovered it through archive footage or simply appreciate the history behind the modern sport.
Made for race days and everyday wear
This T-shirt is made in a dependable 180gsm cotton jersey with a regular everyday fit with a ribbed crew neck and short sleeves. It is available in white, French navy, red, black, grey marl, desert sand, stone, pink, earthy green and forest green, giving the colourful chest artwork a choice of neutral and racing-inspired backgrounds. Sizes run from S to 3XL. Please check the size guide before ordering, particularly if you prefer a closer fit or intend to layer underneath.
It works naturally for race days, summer meetings, the pub, travel and everyday wear. The small chest placement avoids the feel of a souvenir-shop graphic, so it can be worn with jeans, shorts or casual outerwear while still carrying a very specific piece of racing culture. It also makes a considered gift for a racing supporter: personal enough to show that you understand their favourite era, horse or racing figure, but practical enough to be worn regularly.
Printed to order
Each garment is produced only after an order is placed. This made-to-order approach helps us avoid unnecessary stock and waste while giving every design the same focused production process. Because your item is prepared specifically for you, please allow for production time before dispatch and confirm the required size and colour at checkout.
