Henderson studied pitchers, understood their movements and combined preparation with a fearless desire to take the next base.
Born in Chicago on Christmas Day in 1958, Henderson spent much of his childhood in Oakland, California. He excelled as a running back in high school and received opportunities to pursue American football, but chose baseball and signed with the Athletics organisation in 1976. He made his major-league debut in June 1979 and quickly demonstrated that he was unlike any conventional leadoff hitter.
During his first complete season in 1980, Henderson stole 100 bases, breaking the long-standing American League record previously held by Ty Cobb. He was only beginning to redefine what was possible. In 1982, Henderson stole 130 bases, surpassing Lou Brock’s major-league single-season record of 118. No player has matched that total since.
Henderson led the American League in stolen bases seven times during his first spell with the Oakland Athletics. He was not simply a specialist runner. His patience at the plate, ability to draw walks and surprising power made him the ideal player to begin an innings. Opponents had to deal with the possibility of a home run, a walk, a single or a stolen base before the heart of the batting order had even appeared.
The Return to Oakland and a World Series Championship
After playing for the New York Yankees from 1985 into 1989, Henderson returned to Oakland in a mid-season trade. He immediately helped the Athletics reach the World Series, producing an outstanding postseason performance that earned him the 1989 American League Championship Series Most Valuable Player Award.
Henderson batted .400 during the Championship Series against Toronto, recording eight hits, eight runs, five runs batted in and eight stolen bases across five games. Oakland advanced to face the San Francisco Giants in the World Series and completed a four-game sweep to capture the championship. It was a particularly meaningful achievement for Henderson, who had grown up in Oakland and become closely connected with the city and its baseball supporters.
He followed that championship with the finest individual season of his career. In 1990, Henderson batted .325, scored 119 runs, stole 65 bases and recorded a .439 on-base percentage. He also matched his career high with 28 home runs, showing that his influence extended far beyond his record-breaking speed.
Henderson led the American League in runs, stolen bases and on-base percentage while helping Oakland win 103 games and another league pennant. His all-round contribution earned him the 1990 American League Most Valuable Player Award, making him the first regular leadoff hitter since Pete Rose in 1973 to receive a league MVP honour.
On 1 May 1991, Henderson stole the 939th base of his career to move beyond Lou Brock and become baseball’s all-time stolen-base leader. He continued to add to that total for more than a decade, eventually retiring with 1,406 stolen bases. That remains 468 more than Brock’s total and is one of the most commanding career records in any major baseball category.
Henderson played for nine teams during a 25-season career, including four separate spells with the Athletics. He won a second World Series championship with Toronto in 1993 and remained a dangerous runner deep into his career. At the age of 39, he once again led the American League in stolen bases.
The Greatest Leadoff Hitter in Baseball History
Henderson completed his major-league career with 3,055 hits, 297 home runs, 1,115 runs batted in and a .401 on-base percentage. His 2,295 runs scored remain the most in baseball history, an appropriate record for a player whose purpose was to reach base and find a way home.
He also holds the career record with 81 home runs hit from the leadoff position. This combination of speed, power and patience made Henderson an exceptionally difficult opponent. He could begin a game by sending the ball into the stands, working a walk or reaching base and immediately threatening to steal.
His career included 10 All-Star selections, three Silver Slugger Awards, one Gold Glove Award and 12 American League stolen-base titles. He was the 1989 Championship Series MVP, the 1990 league MVP and a member of two World Series-winning teams.

A Lasting Athletics and Hall of Fame Legacy
Henderson was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009, receiving 94.8 per cent of the vote in his first year of eligibility. The Athletics retired his number 24 during the same year, recognising the player widely regarded as the greatest figure in the club’s Oakland history.
He passed away in December 2024 at the age of 65, only days before his 66th birthday. The news brought tributes from former teammates, opponents and supporters across baseball.
