The races that made the legend
Shergar’s racing career was brief, brilliant and ultimately overshadowed by an unresolved crime. Bred and owned by the Aga Khan and trained by Sir Michael Stoute, the colt announced himself in the 1981 Guardian Classic Trial before dominating the Chester Vase. At Epsom, 19-year-old Walter Swinburn sent him clear in the straight and won the Derby by ten lengths—the widest official margin in the race’s history.
Shergar confirmed superiority in the Irish Derby and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, defeating older horses at Ascot. A surprise fourth in the St Leger was his final start, and he retired to the Aga Khan’s Ballymany Stud with six wins from eight races. His first crop offered the beginning of a valuable stud career.
In February 1983 armed men abducted Shergar from Ballymany. A huge police investigation and negotiations followed, but neither horse nor remains were recovered; the IRA has long been considered responsible, though the full facts remain uncertain. Racing supporters prefer also to protect the sporting memory: Swinburn motionless as Shergar surged away at Epsom, a performance of such clarity that tragedy cannot erase it.

The mystery surrounding Shergar can overwhelm discussion, but the Derby deserves to stand independently.
