Born in Ōshū, Iwate, Japan, in 1994, Ohtani developed his game at Hanamaki Higashi High School before beginning his professional career with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. Between 2013 and 2017, he established himself as a genuine two-way player in Japanese baseball. His achievements included winning the Pacific League Most Valuable Player award and helping the Fighters become Japan Series champions in 2016. That success prepared him for an even larger challenge: bringing his unique combination of pitching and hitting to Major League Baseball.
Ohtani joined the Los Angeles Angels collection story in 2018, immediately capturing worldwide attention. He hit 22 home runs during his first MLB season while also making 10 pitching starts, earning the American League Rookie of the Year award. He became the first player of the modern era to qualify for the league leaderboards as both a hitter and a pitcher in the same season. Among the many unforgettable moments from that campaign, he drove in eight runs against Kansas City and then struck out 13 Royals hitters the following evening.
His final Angels season in 2023 brought another collection of achievements. Ohtani batted .304, hit 44 home runs, drove in 95 runs and stole 20 bases. His 44 home runs led the American League, making him the first Japanese-born player to win an American League home-run title. On the mound, he finished 10–5 with a 3.14 earned run average and 167 strikeouts before an elbow injury brought his pitching season to an early conclusion.
Ohtani was unanimously selected as the American League Most Valuable Player for a second time, becoming the first player to win multiple unanimous MVP awards. His Angels years also produced repeated All-Star selections, Silver Slugger honours, three consecutive Outstanding Designated Hitter awards and an American League Hank Aaron Award. Although the Angels did not reach the postseason during his time with the club, his individual performances created a defining period in the team’s modern history.

Ohtani has also represented Japan on the international stage. After contributing to Japan’s bronze-medal finish at the 2015 WBSC Premier12, he became the central figure in the country’s triumphant 2023 World Baseball Classic campaign. Japan defeated the United States in the final, with Ohtani striking out his then-Angels teammate Mike Trout to secure the championship. Ohtani was named tournament MVP and selected to the all-tournament team as both a designated hitter and pitcher.
At the 2026 World Baseball Classic, Ohtani again represented Japan, hitting three home runs and driving in seven runs across four games. Although Japan’s title defence ended against Venezuela in the quarter-final, his performance earned him another place on the all-tournament team as a designated hitter.
After leaving Anaheim, Ohtani continued making baseball history. He became the first MLB player to record at least 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in one season, won further unanimous MVP honours and added World Series championships to his career. Those later successes enhanced his global reputation, but the Angels remain the club where his remarkable MLB journey began and where he established himself as a two-way phenomenon.
