The most complete and technically brilliant football any international team had played in a generation. Spain beat the Netherlands 1-0 in extra time with Andres Iniesta's goal in the 116th minute settling one of the most tense and physical World Cup Finals in the tournament's history. Spain came into the 2010 final in Johannesburg as the reigning European champions, having won Euro 2008 under Luis Aragones. Vicente del Bosque had taken the squad to South Africa and guided them through the tournament playing tiki-taka football built around Xavi, Iniesta, David Villa and a defensive unit organised by Casillas. The Netherlands had produced their best tournament in decades, reaching the final with an aggressive, physical approach that produced more yellow cards in that final than any other match in the tournament. It was a difficult contest, decided ultimately by a moment of individual genius from Iniesta — a volley that landed in the bottom corner of the net after he met a pass from Cesc Fabregas.
