Stuart Pearce spent twelve seasons at Nottingham Forest, making 522 appearances for the club and becoming one of the most respected left-backs in English football history. His physical presence, his commitment in every tackle and his set-piece quality — the thunderous free-kicks that earned him the nickname Psycho — made him the defensive cornerstone of Forest's continued competitiveness in the First Division through the late 1980s and 1990s.

Pearce's story has two chapters in the national consciousness: the penalty miss for England at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, watched by the entire country, and the penalty he scored at Euro 1996, also at Wembley, which he celebrated with the raw emotion of a man who had carried the weight of the first moment for six years. Between those two moments was a career of consistent excellence at club level that never received the same attention as his international heartbreak — which was entirely unjust to a player who gave Forest everything he had across more than a decade.
