Terry Butcher England Hoodie | Players Couture Icon Frame Collection
Terry Butcher is one of the most iconic images in the history of England football. The photograph of him with blood pouring down his face and soaking his white England shirt during the 1990 World Cup qualifier against Sweden, having played on with a head bandage after a cut that required seventeen stitches, remains one of the great images of sporting commitment and England pride. This Butcher hoodie from Players Couture is for fans who know that image and understand what it represents. Fan apparel celebrating a defender who gave everything for England.
Butcher was born in Singapore in 1958 and came through Ipswich Town, where he was part of the Bobby Robson team that won the FA Cup in 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1981. Rangers signed him in 1986 and he won three Scottish Premier Division titles at Ibrox. For England, he earned 77 caps across twelve years and was one of the most dominant central defenders of his era. His partnership at the back gave England a physical solidity that made them one of the most difficult teams to score against in international football.
The 1989 qualifier against Sweden was the night that gave English football its most enduring image of commitment and courage. Butcher suffered a cut that bled profusely throughout the second half. He refused to come off. The white England shirt turned red. He played until the final whistle, England held on for a 0-0 draw that kept their World Cup qualification alive, and the photographs of Butcher leaving the field became one of the defining images of his generation's England career. He captained England and led by example throughout. Find more from the football fanwear collection at Players Couture.
