From Michigan to the 199th Draft Pick
Tom Brady was born in San Mateo, California, in 1977 and grew up following the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Joe Montana. He attended the University of Michigan, where he had to compete constantly for playing time before becoming the starting quarterback.
Brady started 25 consecutive games across his final two college seasons and recorded a 20–5 record. His Michigan career included 5,351 passing yards, while his ability to remain composed under pressure became particularly evident during his final appearances.
Michigan defeated Penn State and Ohio State before facing Alabama in the Orange Bowl. The Wolverines twice recovered from 14-point deficits, with Brady throwing for 369 yards and four touchdowns in a 35–34 overtime victory. The performance provided an early example of the resilience that would later define his professional career.
Despite his college success, Brady was not regarded as an outstanding professional prospect. New England selected him in the sixth round of the 2000 draft with the 199th overall pick. He began his rookie season behind several quarterbacks and completed only three passes.
Two Decades of Success in New England
Brady’s opportunity arrived in 2001 when starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe suffered an injury. Brady took control of the team and helped New England reach Super Bowl XXXVI against the heavily favoured St. Louis Rams.
With the score tied during the closing stages, Brady led a decisive drive that created the winning field goal. New England won 20–17, and Brady received the first of his five Super Bowl Most Valuable Player awards.
Further championships followed against Carolina and Philadelphia after the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Brady developed into the central figure in a team built around tactical flexibility, preparation and situational discipline.
During the 2007 regular season, he threw 50 touchdown passes as New England completed a 16–0 record. The Patriots reached the championship game with an 18–0 overall record but were defeated by the New York Giants. Although the perfect season escaped them, Brady received the first of his three league MVP awards.
New England returned to championship success following the 2014 season, defeating Seattle 28–24 in Super Bowl XLIX. Two years later, Brady led one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history against Atlanta. The Patriots trailed 28–3 before recovering to win 34–28 in overtime.
Brady collected his sixth New England championship when the Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13–3 in Super Bowl LIII. His 20 seasons with the team produced six victories from nine Super Bowl appearances, three league MVP awards and a reputation for delivering when the pressure was at its greatest.
A New Challenge in Tampa Bay
Brady left New England in 2020 and signed with Tampa Bay at the age of 42. The Buccaneers possessed talented players but had not reached the playoffs for 13 seasons. Brady’s arrival immediately changed expectations surrounding the franchise.
He joined an offence featuring Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Cameron Brate and Ronald Jones, while former New England teammate Rob Gronkowski came out of retirement to reunite with him. Antonio Brown and Leonard Fournette also became important members of the developing attack.
Brady threw for 4,633 yards and established a Tampa Bay record with 40 touchdown passes during his first regular season. The Buccaneers finished 11–5 and entered the playoffs as a wildcard team.
Winning Three Away Playoff Games
Tampa Bay began its postseason journey by defeating Washington 31–23. The Buccaneers then travelled to New Orleans to face Drew Brees and the Saints. Brady contributed two passing touchdowns and one rushing score as Tampa Bay won 30–20.
The NFC Championship Game took the Buccaneers to Green Bay, where they faced league MVP Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. Brady completed a crucial touchdown pass to Scotty Miller immediately before half-time, and Tampa Bay protected its lead to win 31–26.
The result sent the Buccaneers to Super Bowl LV, which was being staged at their own stadium. Tampa Bay became the first team to play the championship game at its home ground.
Super Bowl LV and a Seventh Championship
Tampa Bay faced defending champion Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LV. Brady controlled the game from the beginning, completing 21 of 29 passes for 201 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Two of those touchdown passes went to Gronkowski, while another found Brown. The Buccaneers defence prevented Kansas City from scoring a touchdown, and Tampa Bay completed a dominant 31–9 victory.
Brady received his fifth Super Bowl MVP award and collected the seventh championship ring of his career. The victory gave Tampa Bay its second franchise championship and its first since the 2002 season.
At 43, Brady became the oldest starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl. He had joined a new team during an unusual season, learned a different offensive system and delivered a championship at the first attempt.
Record-Breaking Later Seasons
Brady’s Tampa Bay success continued during 2021. He led the league with 5,316 passing yards and 43 touchdown passes while completing a record 485 passes. The Buccaneers finished 13–4 and won their division.
After defeating Philadelphia in the opening playoff round, Tampa Bay faced the eventual champion Los Angeles Rams. The Buccaneers trailed 27–3 but recovered to tie the game during the fourth quarter. Los Angeles completed a late drive to win 30–27, ending Tampa Bay’s championship defence.
Brady briefly announced his retirement before returning for the 2022 season. He passed for 4,694 yards and 25 touchdowns as Tampa Bay won another division title. The season ended with a playoff defeat against Dallas, and Brady retired again in February 2023.
The Greatest Career Record
Brady finished his 23-season career with 89,214 regular-season passing yards and 649 touchdown passes, both leading totals when he retired. His achievements included 15 Pro Bowl selections, three regular-season MVP awards, ten Super Bowl appearances, seven championships and five Super Bowl MVP awards.
He also holds the leading postseason totals in victories, passing yards and touchdown passes. His 251 regular-season wins and 35 playoff victories demonstrate the consistency maintained from his early New England opportunity through his final Tampa Bay season.
Brady’s Buccaneers chapter lasted only three campaigns, but it produced three playoff appearances, two division titles and a championship. He passed for more than 14,000 yards with Tampa Bay and brought a new generation of fans to the franchise.
International Appearances
American football does not normally provide quarterbacks with a separate senior national-team career or a World Cup-style international championship. Brady nevertheless appeared in several important league fixtures outside the United States.
With New England, he won games at Wembley Stadium against Tampa Bay in 2009 and the St. Louis Rams in 2012. He also led the Patriots to victory over the Raiders in Mexico City in 2017.
Brady returned to Europe as Tampa Bay’s quarterback in 2022 for the first regular-season game played in Germany. He threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns as the Buccaneers defeated Seattle 21–16 in Munich. The event demonstrated his enormous international appeal and gave European Tampa Bay fans an opportunity to watch number 12 in person.
