Vincent Kompany captained Manchester City through the most successful period in the club's history — four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and two League Cups across eleven seasons at the Etihad. The Belgian centre-back was the defensive leader around whom Pep Guardiola and Manuel Pellegrini's City sides were organised, and his presence in the dressing room as much as on the pitch was cited by teammates as central to the culture that made the club's success sustainable rather than occasional.

Kompany's most celebrated individual moment came in May 2019, when his long-range shot against Leicester City in the penultimate match of the season — struck from outside the box in a manner entirely at odds with a centre-back's expected contributions — maintained City's title challenge at the critical moment. It was the kind of goal that a captain scores when the team needs it most, and it captured something about Kompany's entire career: always available, always prepared, always capable of producing something decisive at the moment it was required.
