Glenn Hoddle is widely regarded as the most naturally gifted English player of his generation — a midfielder whose touch, vision and passing placed him in a different technical category to almost every other player competing in the First Division through the late 1970s and 1980s. His twelve seasons at Tottenham produced two FA Cups and a connection with White Hart Lane supporters that still endures decades after his departure to Monaco.

Hoddle’s style of play — patient, technical, built for space rather than compressed direct football — was not always embraced by England management, but those who watched him regularly at Spurs always understood they were seeing a player who would have been entirely at home in the greatest European sides of his era.
