Rivals initially viewed the methods with suspicion; results made them standard practice. Pipe became champion trainer 15 times and saddled 4,183 winners in Europe, creating unprecedented depth from handicappers as well as stars.
His record season of 243 winners in 1999/2000 demonstrated the organisation behind the operation. At Cheltenham he trained 34 Festival winners, headed by Make A Stand’s 1997 Champion Hurdle and Granville Again’s 1993 success. Carvill’s Hill’s destructive Welsh Grand National performance, Bonanza Boy’s staying power and Moonax’s St Leger victory on the Flat showed the stable’s range. Tony McCoy’s championship rise was closely linked to Pipe’s supply of relentlessly competitive mounts.
Pipe retired in 2006 and handed Pond House to his son David, but modern jump racing still operates in the environment he helped create. Precision fitness, strategic race placement and attention to marginal gains are now expected rather than eccentric. His legacy is therefore larger than a championship count: he altered how trainers prepare horses and how ambitious a large jumps stable could be.
