Neville Southall won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award in 1985 — voted the best player in England by the professionals who faced him — and made 750 appearances for Everton across sixteen seasons. The Welsh goalkeeper’s shot-stopping, his command of his penalty area and his longevity at the top level made him the most important goalkeeper in Everton’s modern history by an enormous margin.

Southall’s loyalty to Goodison through the most successful and then the more difficult periods gave him a connection with supporters that his performance level entirely justified. His 92 Wales caps, earned across a career defined by consistency and durability, confirmed a player who delivered at the international level throughout his club career.
