Bred in Canada, owned by Charles Engelhard and trained at Ballydoyle by Vincent O’Brien, the imposing son of Northern Dancer was unbeaten champion two-year-old before arriving in Britain. Lester Piggott’s restraint complemented Nijinsky’s acceleration, particularly in a 2,000 Guineas victory achieved despite an interrupted preparation.
At Epsom he swept past Gyr to win the Derby, then defeated older horses in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The St Leger demanded a longer distance and came after a bout of ringworm, yet Nijinsky prevailed to seal the Guineas–Derby–St Leger treble. His narrow defeat by Sassafras in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe remains debated, with the long season and a delayed challenge both part of the story.
Nijinsky retired with 11 wins from 13 starts and became a major international stallion, siring Derby winner Golden Fleece, Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand and numerous champions. The Triple Crown is difficult precisely because it asks for speed in spring, balance at Epsom and stamina in autumn. Nijinsky met every test, making his 1970 campaign one of Flat racing’s most complete achievements.

The Triple Crown has become more impressive with every season it remains unclaimed. Modern campaigns tend to specialise, yet Nijinsky won a mile Classic, handled Epsom, beat older horses and then stretched to the St Leger.
