Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima was born in Bento Ribeiro, Rio de Janeiro, in 1976. He came through Cruzeiro and made his Brazil debut at 17. PSV Eindhoven and then Barcelona recognised his extraordinary talent and Real Madrid brought him to the Bernabeu in 2002. In between, he had won the World Cup with Brazil in 1994 as a teenage squad member, won it as a player in 1998 — having suffered a mysterious seizure on the day of the final — and then, after three serious knee injuries that threatened to end his career, returned to win it in 2002 in Japan and South Korea by scoring eight goals including both in the final against Germany. He won the Ballon d'Or in 1997 and 2002. He won the FIFA World Player of the Year award three times.

His movement was unlike anything defenders had encountered. The step-overs. The acceleration. The ability to go past two or three players in a moment of explosive pace and skill. His finishing was clinical and varied — he scored with both feet and with his head, from inside the area and from outside it.
