Whitney Houston: The Voice, Her Albums, Story and Legacy

It's been a big year for Whitney Houston's legacy. In 2026 the Recording Academy honoured her with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and on 7 August, two days before what would have been her 63rd birthday, WH1TNEY brought all eleven of her Billboard Hot 100 number ones together on one record. It capped a 40th-anniversary celebration of her career.

The orchestral tour The Voice of Whitney: A Symphonic Celebration reaches the Detroit Opera this October. Here's our fan-to-fan look at The Voice, and you can find more tribute designs in our Female Singers collection.

From the Church Choir to Clive Davis

Her mother is the singer Cissy Houston and her cousin is Dionne Warwick. She joined the choir at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark at the age of five and sang her first solo there at 12. After teenage modelling, she was spotted singing in New York clubs. Her 1985 debut spent 14 weeks at number one, the longest run for a debut album by a woman, and gave her three consecutive number one singles.

Seven in a Row

Whitney (1987) was the first album by a woman to enter the Billboard 200 at number one. Its singles stretched her run to seven consecutive Hot 100 number ones, ending with "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" in April 1988, a record no other artist has matched. Her "Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV in 1991 remains iconic.

"I Will Always Love You" became the best-selling single by a female artist. She went on to star in Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher's Wife (1996).
