Franco Baresi won five Serie A titles and three European Cups with AC Milan, serving as the defensive foundation of Arrigo Sacchi’s revolutionary side that dominated European football in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The libero’s reading of the game, his composure on the ball and his organisation of the offside trap that became one of football’s most studied defensive systems made him the definitive Italian defender of his generation.

Baresi’s retired number 6 at the San Siro is the permanent acknowledgement of nineteen seasons of defensive excellence given to one club. His partnership with Paolo Maldini has never been surpassed in Milan’s history, and his performances in European finals confirmed a player who raised his level for the occasions that mattered most.
